Choosing a Laboratory Workbench

Four decisions, in the order that makes them easy.

Start from the work

List what happens at the bench: what sits on it, how long people stand or sit there, and what gets spilled or wiped. That decides almost everything else.

Choose a structure

Size it

Length

Fit the wall run, and allow for doors, columns and services.

Depth

Leave room for equipment plus a clear working area.

Height

Standing or sitting. Equipment can change this.

Add what you need

  • Rear upstand, if it stands against a wall
  • Shelf or drawer, for what stays close
  • Levelling feet for uneven floors, castors if it moves
  • 316L if chlorides or strong disinfectants are used
